The influence of individual low back health status on workplace trunk kinematics and risk of low back disorder

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine whether kinematic-based low back disorder risk measurement of the job was different from for those workers suffering from recent low back injuries compared to asymptomatic controls. The study suggests that trunk kinematics and subsequent risk estimates are dictated primarily by job design and not influenced by the low back health status of the worker.

Trunk kinematics of one-handed lifting, and the effects of asymmetry and load weight

Article Abstract:

One-handed lifting increases the range of motion in the lateral and transverse planes and produces an additional sagittal flexion, posing a greater risk of lower back disorders to the individual than two-handed lifting. An increase in load asymmetry increases the range of motion, velocity and acceleration of lifts. An increase in load weight requires greater spine movements and has a relatively lower effect on trunk kinematics. A lumbar spine electrogoniometer calculates the relative motion components in the trunk's three cardinal planes.
