Meta-analysis on total braking time

Article Abstract:

A study was performed to evaluate the variation sources involved in total braking time (TBT) during driving using a meta-analytic method and to develop a meta-model that can predict the TBT distribution reflecting various driving conditions. The minimum following gap (MFG) and stopping sight distance (SSD) were two parameters related to TBT. Results indicated that TBT was influenced by four characteristics, namely, awareness of the driver, type and distance brake stimulus and country in which the study took place. The MFG in Israel was established at 1 s while SSD in US was 2.5 s.

Minimum driver braking times

Article Abstract:

The minimum time it takes for a driver to recognize the need to slow down and actually apply braking pressure to the brake pedal should influence following distance. The level of the driver's awareness of the autos in front of them and the following distance were found to be significant factors determining braking time in a group of 51 subjects.

Triggering and modulation

Article Abstract:

A study on the response of driving subjects to emergency braking indicates that alteration in angular velocity during optic expressing of the leading vehicle may be employed somewhat tempers braking movements, but the sight of brake lights on a vehicle in front of the driver can lead the driver to overbrake as quickly as possible.
