Article Abstract:

Telex is well-established in the United Kingdom. It is convenient, but has its disadvantages with it being noisy, slow and limited with the range of characters. Some advantages have been made with automatic transmission and quieter machinery. However, a whole new class of communication presents itself with teletex. Deloitte Haskins and Sells Management Consultants sent its first teletex message in December, 1983 - the first commercial teletex message in the United Kingdom: The speed increases from seventy words per minute for the telex to 4,000 words per minute for the teletex. The range of characters is full and storage capacity is increased. It can be handled by any microcomputer with the proper connections. British Telecom claims that charges are competitive with telex.

Article Abstract:

Accounting Information Development Services (AIDS), owned by Mike Salinger, is a United Kingdom company which services small companies who are too small to afford a qualified accountant or in-house computer, but big enough to require monthly reports. The companies subcontract AIDS to process their bookkeeping, and compile monthly reports at a price averaging two thousand pounds per year. The company redesigns their record-keeping systems according to AIDS plan and provides the bookkeeping up- to-trial-balance. Then they send the data to AIDS which takes care of the rest. AIDS is now franchising its business, selling franchises to entrepreneurs who sell the benefits of AIDS to small businesses. The costs and income projections are included for potential franchisees.

Article Abstract:

Osborne's machine was an example of portable computers. There are other portable computers in the market. These portable machines now face stiff competition from Tandy Model 100 and Olivetti M10. The machine is a little smaller than an average telephone directory and a little lighter too. It has basic word processing, financial planning, communication and diary possibilities built in and it is powered by rechargeable batteries. It is truly a portable machine. Its price is around 450 pounds. It produces the hard copy when the machine is plugged into a printer. This portable computer is suitable for salesmen, accountants and auditors.
