Model makeover

Article Abstract:

High equity returns have been explained in terms of taking risks, while risk can be measured in terms of the volatility of a stock compared with the market as a whole. This model has worked well over a 10-year period, but less well for early 2000. Many stocks formerly seen as low-risk have not performed well in early 2000, whereas many high-risk stocks have performed well. Multi-factor models assess a range of risks that could affect stock price, though it is not always easy to assess which factors are likely to be important.
