Networking for the 21st century

Article Abstract:

Computer networks are no longer being used primarily to allow the simultaneous use of costly equipment by a number of people. Now that computers are increasingly becoming cheaper, networks are being tapped for specifically for their ability to make data and applications available to a pool of users. Local area networks (LANs) enable users within the same office share information stored in the central computer. More powerful that LANs are wide area networks (WANs) which allow users from geographically dispersed locations to access identical information. The speed, capacity and overall effectiveness of computer networks are likely to increase in the coming years given the continuous efforts to innovate the technology.

About the size of it

Article Abstract:

Rightsizing as a selective method of downsizing information technology (IT) calls for the review of the computer applications on existing mainframe computers of organizations. Companies should not equate IT downsizing to a mere switch from mainframe structures to server and network structures. The decentralization of data processing functions characteristic of downsizing is intended to provide more cost-efficient and function-specific network-based computer applications to organizations. Vernon Pools and Eagle Star Life are two companies which undertook downsizing efforts on their computer systems.

The network ethic

Article Abstract:

Networking allows users of connected personal computers (PCs) to share resources and communicate with one another. The most common route to networking is by upgrading a single-user PC system to a local area network (LAN). A central computer, called the file server, stores software and data, which makes system 'housekeeping' simpler and easier. Software packages for network management, as well as new types of cost-saving servers, are developing with great speed. Companies interested in computer networking would do well to seek expert advice considering the wide range of technological options.
