New client challenge for stockbrokers

Article Abstract:

Increased competition is forcing stockbrokers to turn to new methods of marketing to retain existing clients and attract new ones. Pressures on the industry have affected different types of stockbrokers in different ways. Fidelity Stockbrokers is intent on keeping its dominant position in the execution-only business by tailoring its services to suit customers' needs. It has developed new products to attract new clients and is planning to launch margin lending and option writing facilities. Other stockbrokers are moving into fund management in order to improve business.

Cost isn't everything

Article Abstract:

Investors who use stockbroking services in the UK can choose from different types of service, depending on the level of advice required and the amount that investors are prepared to pay for this advice. Investors who are confident about their ability to choose shares should select a broker offering execution-only services, which are the cheapest. Investors unable to afford advice can select pooled investments such as unit trusts. Brokers should provide a free interview to allow investors to judge how efficient they are.

Going for gilts

Article Abstract:

UK government securities (gilts) represent a safe investment since the interest payments and capital to be repaid are set. Investors may get a different amount if they try to sell government securities prior to maturity. Interest rate rises cause the market value of gilts to fall since gilts pay fixed levels of interest which begin to compare less favorably with rising variable levels. The National Savings Stock register provides a cost effective way of buying gilts.
