No buy tips for A and L

Article Abstract:

Alliance and Leicester's stock price has performed well since the company's flotation. Private investors account for 75% of the stocks and brokers have little reason to recommend the stocks while their clients have insufficient. Five brokers from a sample of six rate the shares a hold, while Panmure Gordon rates the shares a sell, citing the maturity of the UK residential mortgage market. Collins Stewart, Credit Lyonnais and UBS are holders and see the stocks as likely to underperform in late 1997. Merrill Lynch and ABN AMRO Hoare Govett are also holders.

Who's next for demutualisation?

Article Abstract:

The trend of demutualization of United Kingdom building societies is likely to take off again following a vote by members in favor of converting Bradford and Bingley into a bank. Customers could receive stocks of cash to the value of between 700 pounds sterling and 1,200 pounds. A majority of borrowers with the building society had been opposed to demutualization, as had the board, which argues that there will be a rise in mortgage rates. Other sectors could be affected by demutualization, including life insurance.
