Nordic know-how

Article Abstract:

Swweden has the highest level of home computer penetration, and Swedes also have high usage rates for the internet. Sweden suffered high unemployment during the early 1990s, and has come to be a leader in European telecoms and internet activities. Around 7.7% of Swedish gross domestic product was invested in communications and IT in 1999 compared to 7.5% for the US, and 5.8% for western Europe as a whole. Swedish society is relatively egalitarian and most people have access to new technology. Internet retailing firms end to be unlisted, though some aim to go public.

Back to the future

Article Abstract:

The British technology industry is becoming more international, and US companies are developing stronger links with Britain with increasing amounts from the US invested in Britain and vice versa. US start-ups have set up British bases, and major US companies such as Microsoft have operations in Britain. Technology and internet stocks are affected by volatity, but the development of links between Britain and the US should help to promote growth. Meanwhile, there is a need for technology to adapt to increased growth of the internet.
