Nowcasting the ocean state: some comments on the infrastructure needed

Article Abstract:

Technological advances have been made in understanding the functioning of the ocean. Space-based programs that have contributed to such understanding are discussed as well as further ways in which space could contribute to ocean monitoring. The space programs include the World Ocean Circulations Experiment, Global Sea Level Observing System Implementation Plan, Ocean Topography Experiment and the US Navy Environmental Research Experiment.

Ocean observation and international cooperation

Article Abstract:

The effects of ocean changes on the Earth's atmosphere and climate are discussed as well as the developments in monitoring and understanding these effects with reference to the French-US Topex-Poseidon radar altimetry satellite. The benefits of the satellite in weather forecasts and in oceanographic monitoring are also presented. Innovations and upcoming space programs related to the use of satellites in oceanography are described.

Manned platforms for oceanographic observation

Article Abstract:

Manned spaceflight is not as expensive and unnecessarily dangerous as claimed by its critics. This technology is found to have practical benefits that are impossible to achieve without a human presence. It was argued that because space observations of the oceans require continuous observation from many instruments and a large aircraft, manned spaceflight is particularly suitable for an astronaut-tended facility.
