Ockham is an insurer which has seen a drop in its stock price, and which has been affected by its links with Lloyd's. The insurance industry has been affected by a business cycle, and this is especially true for automobile insurance, a speciality of Ockham. The cycle may start to move upwards, which should help the company, though a recovery is not ceratin. Ockham is seeking approval to function outside of Lloyd's in the insurance business. The company could become an acquisition target.

United Friendly suffered a rise in underwriting losses for motor insurance in 1st half 1996 and this led to a loss for its general insurance activities. The company is moving out of motor insurance. Underlying performance for life and pensions is difficult to assess due to the company's accounting methods. United Friendly is merging with Refuge to create United Assurance. The profit for this new company is forecast at 124 million pounds sterling by SBC Warburg.
