Ode to interchanges: Houston's highway heaven

Article Abstract:

The Sam Houston Tollway is a beautifully designed roadway that will lead to the growth of a third set of unwanted suburbs around Houston, TX. The Harris County engineers have created a fine design which freely expresses the few materials used in its construction. The roadway is composed of thin concrete slabs placed on Cor-ten steel beams, which are supported by concrete columns clamped to the roadway with steel or concrete beams. The engineers have built ramps at intersections with existing highways. These intersections will provide the sites for the new Houston suburbs.

Biggest show on earth

Article Abstract:

The temporary building housing the Powell Library of the University of California at Los Angeles is basically a tent with a five-year lifespan. The two-story main reading hall is shaped like an airplane's wing while the administration building and two reading rooms are forms based on round tubes. Bowed aluminum ribs covered with layers of woven polyester, vinyl and urethane form the structure, with the interiors being a clever amalgamation of concrete, plywood, plexiglas and fiberboard. The light and airy atmosphere belies the building's monumental purpose.

Cummins Engine Company has introduced its Signature 600 engine which is compact and streamlined, yet packs an advanced fuel-delivery system. Designed by Emilio Ambasz, it embodies the company's philosophy on design: clean, straightforward and functional. This commitment to good design is extended by the company to its present location, Columbus, IN. Buildings designed by some of the world's best architects can be found in this Midwest city. This is in keeping with the vision left by its design-appreciative CEO, Irwin Miller.
