Spreadsheets: a status report

Article Abstract:

The history and continuing development of microcomputer spreadsheets are discussed. The first commercially successful spreadsheet software package was VisiCalc, which was written for the Apple II in 1978. The second generation of spreadsheets, represented by the Lotus 1-2-3 program that was introduced in 1983, offered greater power and functionality to users. The third generation of spreadsheets such as Symphony from Lotus and Framework from Ashton-Tate attempted to integrate spreadsheet functions with other functions such as graphics, databases, and communications applications. The latest trend in spreadsheet appears to be towards more sophisticated financial modeling software.

Tale of a country shopkeeper

Article Abstract:

A UK shopkeeper's experiences with personal computers are described. An Apricot F2 was purchased, and its potential small business uses were analyzed, as were the available prepackaged software programs. No appropriate prepackaged programs were found, so the Superwriter word processing package and Supercalc spreadsheet program which came with the Apricot were adapted for use. The computer has been useful for stock control: the Compsofts DMS Plus system is used for report generation by supplier or subject classification.
