On a roll: meet the CAs who are helping shape Canada's burgeoning golf industry - for these club owners and consultants, it's no longer just a game

Article Abstract:

The golf industry is the latest challenge for Canadian chartered accountants, providing a new business environment where they can exercise their skills. Accountants who have bought interest in or have bought their own country clubs, are stretching their managerial and financial planning skills to turn around the golf club business back into profitability. The golf industry's decline in previous years has been attributed to the exclusivity of these clubs, which slowly decreased membership that is the primary source of revenue. Many of the accountants are finding new revenue sources from country clubs and from flexible membership schemes to improve club facilities and services.

So far, so good: in 1990 the CICA's information technology task force challenged CAs to embrace the information era. The message seems to be sinking in

Article Abstract:

The accounting professions ability to adapt to change is its only assurance of relevance in the rapidly advancing global environment. This was the gist of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants' Task Force on Information Technology's 1990 report. As of 1992, the accounting profession at large seems to have taken heed of the report's recommendations. Accounting firms have steadily embraced information technology in spite of much criticism of the report by some accounting circles.
