Article Abstract:

The London Stock Exchange's newly issued Hampel Committee Principles of Good Governance and Code of Best Practice supersedes the Cadbury and Greenbury Codes of corporate governance. The new Combined Code requires annual reports to include a disclosure of how, and not just whether, simple principles of good governance have been implemented. The Code discusses these principles, which pertain to the directors and the board, directors' remuneration, shareholder relations, and accountability and audit. It also specifies the issues that need to be publicly reported. These include the application of principles, compliance with detailed provisions, justification for the combined posts of CEO and chairman, identification of senior executives, remuneration policy, and the directors' role in account preparation and internal control.

Going, going, gone

Article Abstract:

The British car auction industry is discussed. The sales volume for British car auctions for 1985-86 was 1,679 million pounds sterling. Roughly 95 percent of all car auction sales are to accredited dealers on the wholesale market, although private sales are increasing. The bulk of the cars sold at auction are ex-commercial fleet cars and demonstration models. Special sales of classic and vintage cars are held regularly. The image of the industry has improved with the development of better, more pleasant auction facilities.
