Article Abstract:

British managers have many lessons to learn from their American counterparts. This is evident in the book publishing business. Publishers in the UK are familiar with the thriving publishing industry in the US, yet books printed in Britain continue to be shoddy and overpriced. In comparison, US-printed books are cheaper but offer better quality. American publishers also market their products well. For instance, since many readers prefer acid-free paper since it does not turn yellow at the edges or fall out of the binding, publishers advertises the fact. In addition, bookstores in the US use a sophisticated and clear discounting system. Discount rates are usually about 25% or 30% off New York Times bestsellers. This illustrates the fact that British managers may travel to other countries, but they do not always open their eyes to what they can learn from new environments.

Article Abstract:

Prof. Sandra Dawson is one of the UK's leading authorities on organizational behavior and a well-known advocate of management training. An academic with a sterling reputation earned during a 25-year teaching career spent at London University's Imperial College, Dawson is set to become the new director of the Judge Institute of Management in Cambridge University in Oct. 1995. A firm believer in the need to forge a strong theoretical foundation for management training, Dawson states that training programs should be directed at ensuring that executives relate organizational theory to their own individual experiences. For this reason, Dawson recommends that management training be biased in favor of project work and the analysis of case studies, since this approach allows executives being trained to link theory with current practice.
