Own-label challenge hits M&S meals line

Article Abstract:

UK market researchers, Mintel, have released a report on the market for chilled ready meals that reveals that the sector is growing. From a value of GB 340mn in 1993, the market has grown 70% to a predicted GB 578mn in 1998. The sector was pioneered by retailer Marks & Spencer (M&S), but their market share appears to be falling as other supermarket chains concentrate on reducing the quality advantage enjoyed by M&S. In 1993, M&S controlled 46% of the market, while in 1997 this was down to 40%. Sainsbury had 25% and Tesco had 17% of the market. Mintel comment that with 95% of consumers purchasing their everyday shopping from retailers other than M&S, and that those competitors are closing the gap on quality, M&S's market share may be eroded further.

UK: GROWTH PREDICTED FOR BATTERY MARKET

Article Abstract:

Information Resources has released data showing that over 150mn batteries were sold in the UK during 1999. Although growth in sales was fairly slow during the first ten months of the year growing by just 0.2%, the treat of the Millennium bug provided a much needed seasonal boost for battery sales. Philips Batteries has predicted that during the year 2000 the battery market in the UK will be worth some GB[pound] 292mn, with around 25% of sales being made through supermarkets. Philips also predicts that by the year 2010 that the average household in Britain will be used up to 25 'high drain' battery-powered products.

Natural selection

Article Abstract:

Compared to GB 320mn in 1997, the 1998 UK market for organic food is valued at GB 500mn. Supermarkets are becoming increasingly active in this sector with both Sainsbury's and Waitrose adding to their organic meat lines. Tesco is also aiming to launch organic meat within six months and Marks and Spencer is also having talks with suppliers about organic meat. Sainsbury's is the first supermarket to offer organic ready meals and Lynda Brown who wrote the Shopper's Guide to Organic Food predicts that organic ready meals will be the next large growth sector in the organic food market.
