Package tour companies get summertime blues

Article Abstract:

UK tour operators face weak demand due to the low value of pound sterling, low levels of consumer spending and a hot summer in 1995. Tour operators are cutting rices since there are more than 1 million holidays left unsold. This has affected profit forecasts for the industry. Price increases will be possible in 1995 if capacity is reduced. Meanwhile Stakis has seen a rise in occupancy rates in the UK, though some analysts argue that weak consumer spending is also affecting UK holidays, and tax reductions are needed to reduce spending.

The men who want a straw poll on Europe

Article Abstract:

The UK Referendum Party was set up by a multi-millionaire, James Goldsmith, who argues that Eurocrats have deprived the UK of its sovereignty. He is in favor of a referendum on Europe and argues that a referendum that took place in 1975 was a fraud. The party has candidates from the UK financial services industry, and is vague about the question that should be asked in a referendum. The members of the party hold a range of views, and Goldsmith is in favor of trade barriers being erected by Europe against south-east Asia.

Keeping its bottle

Article Abstract:

Cadbury Schweppes is acquiring a stake of 40% in The American Bottling Company, formed from Select Beverages and Beverage America. This acquisition follows an extension of Cadbury's contract with Coca-Cola Enterprises for Canada Dry and Schweppes to be bottled until 2001, and Dr Pepper to be bottled to 2005. The price paid for the American Bottling stake, at 441 million pounds sterling, is seen as less than some analysts had feared, and Cadbury Schweppes' stock price has benefited.
