Path to empowerment

Article Abstract:

The experience of the South African company Eskom Transmission in the use of self-directed teams offers valuable lessons for other organizations wishing to similarly benefit from self-directed teamwork. Eskom decided to form functional process teams in 1995 as part of a restructuring effort. It faced enormous obstacles in this regard, foremost of which is the challenge of encouraging people exposed to apartheid to take responsibility, show initiative and contribute to group decision making. The company's workers applied the lessons of 'deep democracy,' where the voice of the minority is as valued as that of the majority.
