People matter: commitment to employees, strategy and performance in Korean firms

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to examine the importance of the organization's human capital to the successful execution of strategies. In particular, this research looks into the role of an organization's commitment to its employees' well-being (OCE) in the effective implementation of coherent positioning strategies. Data were collected from a sample of Korean firms, specifically 38 textile firms, 31 machinery firms, 30 automotive parts producers and 30 electronics firms. Findings revealed that OCE by itself occasionally has a minor positive relationship with return on assets (ROA). However, the dynamic between OCE and the active quest for Porter's (1980) strategies for gaining competitive advantage was found to have a significant, positive impact on ROA. More effective execution of dedicated positioning strategies is possible in organizations with a high level of commitment to their people.

The simplicity of competitive repertoires: an empirical analysis

Article Abstract:

The competitive strategy of companies may take the form of simplifying their competitive actions in response to market forces. Factors to be considered in creating the strategy include company performance, the kind, size and profitability of the market, the company's ability to learn and implement different competitive alternatives and the age and size of the firm. In taking these factors into consideration, simplification can take the form of reduced product introductions, reduced product prices or a change in marketing activities. Some common market stresses that initiate simplification are the company's growth and uncertainties in the market that justify a cautious approach and conservation of resources.
