Performance differences in reaction tasks are reflected in event-related brain potentials (ERPs)

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the relationship between spontaneous performance accuracy and event-related brain potentials. The reaction rates on visual and auditory letters of ten healthy subjects were recorded and analyzed. Results revealed that subjects with strong cognitive preparation performed fast stimulus-response-mapping or response identification compared to those with poor cognitive preparation. Thus, performance differences can be attributed to the degree of cognitive preparations.

Perceived urgency of and response time to multi-tone and frequency-modulated warning signals in broadband noise

Article Abstract:

A factorial experiment was conducted to study the pulse parameters believed to have affected the perceived urgency and response time to auditory warning signals. Pulse format, pulse level and inter-pulse interval were considered as independent variables. Subjective perceived urgency was estimated using psycho-physical methods of free-modulus magnitude estimation and paired comparison. Response time substantially fell as perceived urgency rose according to multivariate statistical analyses done.

A psychophysiological evaluation of the perceived urgency of auditory warning signals

Article Abstract:

Pilots are concerned about the lack of a sense of priority of the signals used by cockpit auditory warnings. Aviation psychology would do well to research on the relationship of auditory warning sound parameters and perceived urgency. The linkages among subjective assessments of urgency, reaction time and brainwave activity with three auditory signals are studied.
