Perpetual

Article Abstract:

Perpetual is a fund manager which takes care of investors and customers, and has excellent product design. The company's investment performance has been good over the long term, but less good over the short term, and this drop in performance tables means that the company has lost free advertising. The company also plans to reduce investment in advertising. Funds under management are likely to grow more slowly and Perpetual is likely to have to increase spending on advertising over the long term.

How objectives are met

Article Abstract:

Portfolio managers have to assess investment needs of their clients, and this is a more complex process than deciding between income or capital growth. Portfolio managers may offer portfolios that are customized to each client. Some managers rank investment according to their risk, with Killikand Co using a scale from on to nine. Investors have to decide on how much weighting to give overseas markets, and whether collective investments are preferable to direct investments.

Monitoring portfolio performance

Article Abstract:

Portfolio management is a major cause for complaint among UK investors, according to the 1995 report of the Investment Ombudsman. Some investors have unrealistic expectations, but there is also a need for independent monitoring of performance of portfolio managers. Portfolio managers themselves vary as to how they see the issue. Some argue that comparisons are difficult to make, while others use benchmarking techniques.
