Pioneering advantages in manufacturing and service industries: empirical evidence from nine countries

Article Abstract:

A cross national study involving nine countries has indicated that managers from different countries perceive pioneering to be associated with higher market share and profitability. Most the western managers believe that pioneering improves overall performance and profits. It has been found that pioneering is more likely to occur among service companies many of the respondents say that introducing a new service is easier than introducing a new product. Respondents from western and Asian countries differed in their perceptions of pioneering. Western respondents believe that pioneering supported its own cost advantages. Asian respondents believe that differentiation advantages are more critical in manufacturing industries than in service industries.

Cooperative strategy

Article Abstract:

A classification scheme for mutual gain cooperative strategies between different organizations is developed. The strategies considered include: pool, exchange, de-escalate, and experiment-contingency. These cooperative strategies are examined in four types of environmental life cycle situations: positive-sum growth, zero-sum mature, negative-sum decline, and transformable to positive-sum growth. Cases from domestic and international businesses, non-profit, and government organizations are cited. Examples from game theory, evolutionary biology, and strategic management are used by way of explanation. Cooperative strategy appears to improve value-added efficiency across a wide variety of situations in most cases.
