Article Abstract:

Early vehicle license plates exhibited a white-on-black minimalism, but states later differentiated themselves with color. The material was changed from reflective paint on steel to reflectivized aluminium in the 1960s, enabling multicolor imagery. There has been an explosion in the demand for plate graphics, although production is still undertaken as it was in 1924. New concepts may include bar-coded license plates.
