Playing spy vs. spy

Article Abstract:

Spy photographers try to obtain photographs of future models being tested by car companies. Their existence is an implicit tribute to the car designer, as no other form of design is as eagerly sought after. Photographer Jim Dunne uses unorthodox tactics to get the shots he needs and relies on sources in the industry. However, the sources only reveal tips about competitors' cars, never their own. What designers do worry about is when the spy photos reveal designs similar to their own, leaving them open to charges of plagiarism.

Birth of the unChrysler

Article Abstract:

Chrysler's new LH series, though very popular with buyers and some automobile critics because of its competent functioning and new interiors, has not found favor with design critics. Designers feel that Chrysler created a successful car by copying various features already seen in European and Japanese cars and by using data provided by consumer surveys to decide the features that would make a successful car. They feel that although competent, the LH series lacks personality.

Learning from lala land

Article Abstract:

The European and Japanese automakers set up studios in California to assess the trend of the American market. California is seen to mirror the social and cultural trends in the US. The studios study people's lifestyle, trends in color and material, send reports and models to parent companies, and display the concept cars in auto shows and internal competitions. In some cases these studios influenced the shaping of new vehicles that are being sold worldwide.
