Portsmouth and Sunderland

Article Abstract:

Portsmouth and Sunderland saw a drop in profit for 1995 to 1996 excluding the disposal of Croydon Advertiser. Publishing revenue rose by 5% to 46.6 million pounds sterling but revenue from contract printing dropped by 25% in this period. The group's convenience stores business performed well in the first half of the FY, but less well in the second half. Cost should be reduced and capacity increased through an investment in a new printing press. The company's profit is forecast at 8.5 million pounds sterling for 1996 to 1997.

Johnston Press

Article Abstract:

Johnston Press is a United Kingdom regional newspaper publisher, and a larger percentage of the population reads a regional newspaper as opposed to the national press. The company has acquired Portdmouth and Sunderland Newspapers, and ranks fourth in the UK market for regional newspapers. The company has been successful in controlling costs and should gain from economies of scale as it expands. Additional acquisitions are likely to achieve this.
