Preparing for life after the boss departs

Article Abstract:

Management succession is a particular problem in small companies where founders still have control. The transition should be planned, and management experience should not be lost. Larger companies can promote internally, but headhunters may be needed if there are not enough internal candidates. Companies can import skills by changing bosses. The founder will have had entrepreneurial skills, but other skills may be needed in later stages in the company's life. Founders may not always want to let go, partly for emotional reasons.

Rate threat from weak sterling

Article Abstract:

UK interest rates may have to rise due to the weakness of pound sterling. The pound has dropped by almost 8% against currencies of the UK's main trading partners between February and Mar 1995, and this could push up UK inflation in interest rates are not raised. There could be a rise of 0.5% in April 1995 or May 1995 if the pound not not recover lost value. If the government does not act this could be seen as weakness though there may also be speculation against the pound if rates are raised.

Rude awakening for multimedia dreamers

Article Abstract:

Multimedia technology was fashionable in 1996 and many companies claimed multimedia credentials before this fashion evaporated. There have been other fashions related to technology such as electronics in the 1980s, and the later fashion for biotechnology companies. Non-games producers of multimedia products have been more severely affected by disappointment partly due to intense competition. Games companies have performed better and some have performed well over Christmas 1996.
