Productivity, Strategy, and the CEO

Article Abstract:

Very few companies utilize their CEO in their productivity efforts. Involvement of the CEO in the strategic production planning could be very instrumental in the success of the planning. In the past, more employee participation rather than CEO participation was stressed. Since the CEO reflects the values and philosophy of the company, his role in the productivity efforts is that of a salesman both within and outside the company. Several innovative strategic plans originated by the company CEO are mentioned. The CEO should actively communicate the efforts of the production program, promote participation, and remain open to innovations in the planning.

Communication, both upward and downward, is essential to a well run and productive organization. Horizontal communication between workers, as well as managers is also necessary to enchance productivity. Several examples of counter productive activities of co-workers are studied. Situations and solutions are discussed. Better communication on the worker level is an old solution to the productivity problem. It is often neglected, and the consequences are widespread. Managers and supervisors must emphasize the need for communication in every direction and at all levels.
