Professional vs financial capital in the field of health care - struggles for the redistribution of power and control

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the diverse functions and goals of different organizations and individuals involved in the financing, production and consumption of health services. The conceptual tools of sociologist Pierre Bourdieu were utilized to carry out the analysis. Changes in accounting and accountability and the chances of reinforced financial control over health care providers were also examined. In addition, the near absence of competition among central hospitals and competition between university hospitals, and economic argumentation in health care institutions were analyzed. Results indicated that organizations and individuals have different probabilities of winning or losing that correlate with their relative power that is influenced by the distribution of valued capitals.
