Research note: a cost-benefit analysis of letter prenotification and follow-up
Article Abstract:
A cost-benefit analysis of mailed prenotification and follow-up of mail surveys revealed that both have questionable value in improving the effectiveness of mail surveys. The cost-benefit analysis, which comprised a 2 x 2 design with control group, considered cost and the quality, rate and time of response. The least cost-effective method was the survey with prenotification, and the most cost-effective method was the control group's simple survey. The use of follow-up letters produced the best response rate, but it was insignificantly better than the control group.
