Regulatory changes in the electric utility industry: investigation of effects on shareholder wealth

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the market reaction of the electric utility industry to the Energy Policy Act of 1992 and the 1993 announcement by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission that promoted competition in Florida. Multivariate analysis was carried out to examine the redistribution of wealth within the industry. Results indicated that regulatory changes in the industry and the opening of a transmission line had a negative influence on the stock values of electric utilities.
