Resisting the 'new public management': Absorption and absorbing groups in schools and GP practices in the UK

Article Abstract:

There have been management changes in the public sector in the UK and in many other countries, broadly described as the new public management (NPM). Hood captured the central features of NPM as the lessening or removal of differences between the public and private sector and changing the emphasis from process accountability to accountability in terms of results, seen as moving 'down group' and 'down grid'. The down grid concern of NPM in the context of schools and GP practices is considered.

Recent financial and accountability changes in general practice: an unhealthy intrusion into medical autonomy?

Article Abstract:

Government regulation of financial and accountability changes regarding the affairs of general practitioners have been viewd with negative concern by the medical profession. The reforms imposed have some historical precedents but they are seen as irrelevant, counter to the values and concerns of general practicioners and as an intrusion into the profession.
