Restructuring the purpose of IT in an organization

Article Abstract:

The information technology (IT) department within a business enterprise has experienced a significant change. The IT department, which used to wield its power over the entire business organization, is going through the difficulties of adjusting to the new marketplace's demands. The reasons behind the difficulties of IT departments, the future of IT departments, and the measures that company executives should adopt to make IT departments more effective in achieving corporate objectives are discussed.

Making the best of new technology

Article Abstract:

Business leaders who wish to maximize their organization's productivity would do well to invest in several new technologies. These include company-wide information networks, Internet access, data warehouses and thinking machines. Since they pose a risk, managers are recommended gradually introduce them to users. Prior to this, however, they should conduct a thorough planning, implementation and user training to ensure that the investments meet management's and users' expectations.

Managers need to understand and adapt to the changes taking place in information technology (IT) to better manage the system. A number of businesses are already utilizing information technology for various applications. IT management should be adopted based on existing management principles rather than technology influencing management. Managers should select the appropriate technology device that would best suit and serve company operations.
