Retail outlook predicts moderate growth into the millennium

Article Abstract:

The US retail industry is envisioned to sustain its growth on the strength of strong consumer confidence, a generally health economy, and a lack of considerable inflation, according to the 1999 Retail Industry Outlook from CIT Group/Commercial Services. Projected growth rates for consumer spending in various retail categories include 3.9% for apparel and footwear in 2000 from 2.5% in 1999; as well as 4.0% for furniture until 2000. Real retail sales are predicted to grow at 4.7% in 1998 and about 2.9% in 1999, as personal consumer expenditures are anticipated to grow at 5.9% and 3.9%, respectively, before increasing slightly to 4.0% in 2000.

U.S. video games reach record sales

Article Abstract:

US video game retail sales improved by 22% from 1997, to reach a record $6.3 billion in 1998, according to NPD Group. Top growth categories include Next Generation software, which grew by 75% in units and 51% in dollars; console software, which expanded by 53% in units and 38% in dollars; portables, which increased by 50% in dollars; and accessories, which grew by 50% in dollars. The video-game retail industry will register sales growth rates of between 10% to 15% in 1999, based on various favorable factors such as very reasonably priced software and hardware, according to Ed Roth, president of NPD's Leisure Activities Tracking Service.

It's calorie counting and fast food for Americans, says Simmons' study

Article Abstract:

Over 45% of Americans who are trying to lose weight are eating in fast food chains according to media and market study by Simmons in spring 1998. Health club memberships also declined by 13.5% in the same period. The study also showed that Micro Brewed beer are gaining popularity among 23% of those alcoholic drinkers, with 68% drinking regular locally-brewed beer. Meanwhile, 48% of beer drinkers drink imported beer. There is also a 21% increase in gin or vodka martinis consumption in 1997 from 1996 while cigarette smoking rises to 15% in the same period.
