Robson Rhodes: birth of a business counsellor

Article Abstract:

The reorganization of UK-based Robson Rhodes prevented the accountancy firm from being swallowed by one of its more stable competitors. To ward off possible bankruptcy, managing partner Hugh Aldous has had to introduce radical measures. The firm decided to focus its attention on its recognized areas of expertise, including building societies and the construction industry; to close offices in regions not considered to be areas of economic growth; and to limit the type of clients it accepts only to those that need the services of a 'business counselor' on a long-term basis. More importantly, Robson Rhodes recruited outside professional managers to help turn the organization into a 'managed firm.' Ray Pierce, former CEO of the Mortgage Corp joined Robson as CEO while Mel Smaje became human resources director.

Preserved for performance

Article Abstract:

The Blackheath Concert Halls is a 100-year old music hall that has successfully undergone renovation. Constructed in 1895, the concert venue is currently being managed and preserved by the Blackheath Halls. Through the effort of the foundation, staffed by only eight workers and composed of 14 voluntary directors, the halls were saved from demolition and are now utilized not just for concert performances but also for art exhibitions, seminars, group meetings and educational music lessons. With profits barely surpassing the breakeven point, the major income of the halls come from music recording companies while bar and catering services, subscriptions and donations creating a measly source of revenue. To avoid taxation and liability, the foundation applied for charity and limited liability company status.
