Captain Bob's belated legacy

Article Abstract:

The British Pensions Act of 1995 hs led to lower annuity rates because of pressure on pension funds to buy long government securities. This has led to distortions in the market for government securities. Changes in the rules may allow pension funds to use corporate bonds as well as government bonds. Changes are not likely to occur prior to 2001, though they could benefit both those seeking to buy annuities, and equity investors when they do occur. The impact of any change in the regulations cannot easily be forecast with any degree of precision.

The dubious legacy of Mr Maxwell

Article Abstract:

The UK Pensions Act is geared to safeguarding pension fund assets, and includes other provisions relating to state pensions and the taxation of pensions. This includes a move toward equalization of retirement ages for men and women affecting women born after 1950. The government argues that this is necessary because the ratio of people in work to those receiving pensions will bring too heavy a burden. The UK Labor Party is in favor of allowing people to retire whenever they want between the ages of 60 years old and 70 years old.
