SEC warns PR pros to 'critically analyze' info before pitching press

Public relations professional are responsible to critically analyze information that is provided to them before disseminating it to the media and public, according to Kelly Bowers, SEC's Assistant Regional Dir, Office Enforcement. Bowers issued the warning at the PRSA/LA workshop on Oct 17, 2000 following the false Emulex press release sent through Internet Wire (IW). IW CEO Michael Terpin recognized the significance of verifying information that may affect investors as well as the vulnerability of PR professionals when a crime has been committed.
