Safety first proves a good way to inflate a share price

Article Abstract:

Wardle Storeys is a lifeboat maker which has seen a rise in its stock price after reporting better results than expected. Merrill Lynch forecasts a rise in sales of 150% for Wardle Storeys' inflatable systems division in the three years from 1998. Ferries will have to comply with new international specifications in Jul 1998, and Wardle believes it is the only producer of life rafts meeting these specificiations. Wardle also produces premium-quality PVC tablecloths and expects growth for this division.

Intercare, a healthcare products supplier is well placed to benefit from the ageing population. Chief executive John Parker has divested non-core businesses, made acquisitions and employed a new finance director and chairman. The company is now concentrating on designing, manufacturing and distributing electric scooters and wheelchairs from its sites in the UK, North America and the Netherlands. It acquired Sungift, a scooter supplier, in April 1996, and Optiway of Toronto, a scooter maker.
