Sailing towards troubled waters

Article Abstract:

A number of factors are contributing to the increased attention currently being given to the Navy's carrier program by the Congress, the Dept of the Defense, and even by some Navy officers. Among these factors are the cost of the new carrier, CVN77, the decline in the number of aircraft on board US carriers, a number of technical and operational problems with the principal carrier-based aircraft F/A-18 Hornet, the loss of antisubmarine capabilities of carriers and the issue of a common support aircraft.

Changing Signals on the Kursk Lift

Article Abstract:

The salvage operation of Russia's nuclear submarine Kursk is lacking financing and has fallen behind schedule. The original plan, which involved Brown and Root Services, has been discarded in favor of a Netherlands-led plan that involved drilling holes in the hull before it is raised from the sea bottom by a network of cables.
