School furniture and the user population: an anthropometric perspective

Article Abstract:

The relationship between reported spinal symptoms in an adolescent student population, and the comparison between their school furniture and their individual anthropometric dimensions is discussed. School furniture may have a role to play in the development of symptoms regarding the spine in adolescent students.

Trunk muscle activity in different modes of carrying schoolbags

Article Abstract:

Electromyographic (EMG) activity from rectus abdominis and erector spinae was recorded bilaterally in five static conditions to study the correct mode of carrying schoolbags. The results suggested that the physical stresses of carrying book bags could be minimized by the design of a double pack.

The weight and use of schoolbags in New Zealand secondary schools

Article Abstract:

The weights of schoolbags and factors affecting the use of schoolbags among secondary school students in five New Zealand schools are studied. This study reveals that students may be at a higher risk of developing musculoskeletal symptoms.
