Seasonality in Japanese household demand for meat and seafood

Article Abstract:

Relationships exist between meat and seafood demand in Japanese at-home consumption. Such relationships were noted to be partly seasonal probably because of the protein consumption habits of the Japanese people. Utilization of monthly data on Japanese household at-home consumption and expenditures on various protein food group items revealed that budget shares for tuna, fresh salmon, salted salmon and cattlefish tend to be higher than that of chicken, beef and other seafood products during spring.

The impact of BSE on Japanese retail meat demand

Article Abstract:

A Japanese meat demand system was estimated as a gradual switching Rotterdam model in order to assess the impact of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) on Japanese retail meat market. The results, based on data from April 1994 to December 2002, indicate that the Japanese retail meat demand system underwent a two-month transition period following the initial BSE discovery and continued to adjust subsequently.
