Seeing a way to compliance

Article Abstract:

The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations require employers to provide free eye examination for employees who customarily use display screen equipments in the performance of their jobs. Although the possibility that companies will get caught for non-compliance is very slim, it is still advisable for them to obey the law. This is because the penalty for companies caught ignoring the regulation is usually greater than the cost of simply complying. To cut compliance costs, employers may use the City University Vision Screener being marketed by City Visual Systems Ltd. It is a cost-effective and user-friendly software tool for regular employee eye check-up and has proven to be a better alternative for traditional screening methods such as using dedicated vision screening devices or visiting optometrists.

The smell of success

Article Abstract:

Industries dealing with perfume and food no longer have to depend solely on scent experts who can easily be rendered ineffective by the common cold. They can now make use of recently developed olfactory sensing equipment, an alternative that is more objective, more consistent, more flexible and less expensive. The first 'electronic nose' was launched in the market by UK firm AromaScan in 1994. The product, called AromaScanner, can characterize and represent any odor it analyzes. Other products that were later introduced include the NOSE Neotronics Olfactory Sensing Equipment and the Neural Nose, both from Neotronics Ltd. Electronic noses are now being used in a wide variety of applications outside the food and perfume industries. They have proven very effective in detecting fires and in analyzing air and water.
