Hewlett Packard was set up in 1938 and produces printers, calculators and scanners, as well as computers. The company is also involved in electronic components, analytical devices and medical electronic equipment. Most of its profit comes from the US, which accounts for under half of sales. profit growth has been affected by lower demand for products like workstations but this appears to be improving as demand picks up. The company is operating in a crowded market which is also showing growth.

Semiconductor stocks have performed well since fall 1998 and no serious sell-offs have occured since a peak in 1999. Earnings could be affected by factors such as problems in chip-delivery from Taiwan, but this may not be long-term. Internet and high-tech companies can provide strong profits, and investors can select a mix of established an new companies. Large companies such as Microsoft may be able to continue leadership for some years, and they have the economic strength to move into new areas.
