Senior officers see UAVs over-hyped, urge caution in acquisition

Article Abstract:

A senior military officer has recommended a review of the assumptions about Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) such as the capability of taking out a target with precision without risking the life of the pilot and the capability of remaining aloft for long hours, before the allotment of large funds for their procurement due to the UAV crashes that promote the view that unmanned vehicles are inherently unreliable and safe. Critics have also pointed out that unmanned does not necessarily mean inexpensive as there is a requirement for a ground control station, maintenance and personnel for serving and flying the UAV.
