Seven steps for motivating employees to use PCs include: (1) top management support, (2) communication about PC capabilities and benefits, (3) selection of appropriate equipment, (4) provision of a healthy environment, (5) training, (6) establishment of communication channels, and (7) controls. Three types of effective employee computer training are: (1) class room instruction, (2) computer-generated tutorials, and (3) user manuals.

Managing engineers effectively

Article Abstract:

It takes a combination of engineering expertise and management finesse to be an engineering manager. Engineering managers need to understand their working environment thoroughly. They must try to mesh organizational needs with the personal needs of staff. They must be simultaneously flexible and firm. They must address their staff's professional interests and their own managerial goals. They must be leaders; intuitive and innovative. They must maintain technical expertise in their fields to maintain credibility. They must know how to work in a team of essentially nonteam players.
