Share dealing: the search for a good broker

Article Abstract:

UK investors have been surveyed on their needs when using a stockbroker. Investors attach more importance to service than to costs. Cost are important, however, when investors want a dealing-only service. Personal attention and knowing the stockbroker are important for many investors. They also want brokers to be open about charges. ShareLink ranks high for dealing-only services, while Neilson Cobbold ranks high for dealing with advice and Nat West Stockbrokers and Killik and Co perform best in the advisory portfolio management category.

Pond ratios

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom investors may feel that smaller stockbrokers are more prepared to spend time on them, and smaller brokers are aware that the promise of a personal service makes them attractive. They argue that they are more accessible both in terms of being less formal and in terms of physical availablity for local clients. Clients of large firms may also see themselves as linked to individuals within the firm, obtaining a personal service and benefiting from the capability of a big firm.

Wheeling on dealing

Article Abstract:

Stockbrokers can be used in a number of ways, and investors cancut costs by using dealing-only services. Dealing with advice allows investors to discuss ideas with those more involved in the market, and the advice is not charged for separately. Investors may use a mix of services and even use more than one broker. Annual charges vary widely for the same number of transactions and the same size portfolio. Brokers tend to be rated of farctors other than cost, like good investment advice.
