Sharemaster plus teletext: the ideal couple

Article Abstract:

Synnergy Software's Sharemaster Plus share price monitoring program for the private investor works on IBM-compatible PC with at least 512K of memory, and a teletext card to give automatic access to daily Ceefax and Oracle stock prices transmitted by the BBC and ITV. A lead from a television aerial must be used to plug into the teletext card. The text card and software enable the computer to be used as a teletext-only TV receiver. The keyboard functions like a usual teletext control pad which will allow the user to bring up individual pages. The software gives the user the ability to capture share prices. Other features include portfolio analysis; graphical and non-graphical analysis; and the importing of data. The system, overall, is powerful, flexible, and approachable with well-written documentation.

Tales of two fax cards

Article Abstract:

Facsimile (fax) transmission cards for personal computers have advantages over fax machines in terms of price and features. Computer files can be stored on a hard disk prior to transmission making transmission and automatic re-transmission easier. Incoming messages are put onto the hard disk where they can be viewed before printing. Two fax cards available in the UK are Softech's pc-Fax card and Interquadram's JTFax card. The pc-Fax card is user friendly and the fax optical character recognition facility for translating incoming fax into data was easy and accurate. The pc-Fax card can send transmissions at baud rates of 9600, 7200, and 4800. JTFax is an inexpensive card that can only send transmissions at 4800 baud but is an ideal card for handling a high level of traffic inexpensively.
