Investors can benefit from using the Internet for sending e-mail, obtaining information, and using financial services. The basic equipment needed includes a modem, a computer and a telephone socket. There are 100 access providers for the Internet for UK investors to choose from, and they should seek a provider with a local point of presence in order to keep costs low. There are advice sites that can answer questions, and news services are being launched, including data on share prices that is updated several times daily.

Private investors can obtain information through the internet that was previously only available for professional investors. There are also dangers arising from an increasing number of interactive sites, since companies may not be authorised in the United Kingdom, so UK investors may not be protected by investor compensation schemes. The major banks and financial service companies have internet sites, and links are provided to a large number of companies by Interactive Investors and Moneyworld.
