Article Abstract:

Smaller companies have tended not to perform as well as larger firms in terms of their stock price in the three years to Oct 1998, though they have previously been seen as offering good growth prospects. There are still individual smaller firms that have performed exceptionally well, and fund managers aim to select sectors where there are higher proportions of such small firms. Investors can find opportunities in the smaller firms' sector although it is not in fashion, and these may be niche firms or in industry segments that are not regulated.

Should I stay or should I go?

Article Abstract:

The Asian financial crisis has affected unit trusts geared to emerging markets in general, as well as those geared to Asian markets. More specialized trusts have been worse hit. Further volatility is likely, and Far Eastern markets could take some time to recover compared to Latin America. One way of managing risk in these markets is to invest a small amount every month. A unit trust specializing in global emerging markets may be the best option for new investors. Emerging markets offer opportunities for long-term investors, despite the risks.

Europe: should you stay or go now?

Article Abstract:

Investors in three funds specializing in Europe have to make a decision on whether to leave these funds. Two unit trusts from Morgan Grenfell no longer have trustworthy track records due to irregularities in their management. Moving to another fund involves costs, but staying could involve risks and exposure to volatility. The Kleinwort Benson European Privatisation Investment Trust (Kepit) has not performed well and investors have a range of options due to a struggle to control Kepit.
