Sifting out the fool's gold

Article Abstract:

Investors should beware of selecting funds simply because they have gained top position in league tables, although these funds tend to sell well. Volatility is also important, and many funds placed top in tables have been affected by volatility, due to changes affecting a narrow band of stocks. Information on volatility tends not to be provided, and all of the top 15 funds in Britian have volatility levels that are higher than average. Specialist strategies can bring good returns, but are also risky.

Smaller firms down but not out

Article Abstract:

Smaller firms performed better than larger firms in terms of growth and profit from 1950 to 1989, but they have since underperformed. This is linked to globalization, which has meant that investors focus on larger firms. Recession and interest rate rises have also hit smaller firms. There has been some improvement in the performance of smaller firms in 1999, and it is unclear whether this is a temporary phenomenon. Funds investing in this sector include Laurence Keen, which has performed better than the Hoare Govett Smaller Companies Index.
