High stakes

Article Abstract:

Investment trusts specialising in development and venture capital can offer high returns, though they also tend to involve a long-term investment, and may involve risks. Venture capital funds are among the top ten investment trusts ranked in terms of their performance over 10 and five-year periods. Some investments do not perform well, and not all small firms invested in survive. These funds are different from venture capital trusts which offer tax benefits. VCTs offer the full benefit of tex relief to investors purchasing stocks when the VCTs are floated.

So farewell then, BES

Article Abstract:

The Business Enterprise Scheme (BES) was a United Kingdom scheme providing tax advantages to encourage investment, launched in 1983 and abolished in 1994. The last BES schemes maturing in 1998 and 1999 are mainly real estate investments specialising in repossessed buildings and accommodation for rent, especially to students. Schemes had to last five years for relief from capital gains tax and income tax. Prestigious corporate financiers tended to avoid these schemes and it was newcomers which became BES sponsors, and they were sometimes too optimistic at the start.
